What Is Root Canal Therapy?

If a tooth becomes infected, your dentist will typically want to perform a root canal. During a root canal, we’ll first make sure that you’re comfortably numb, and then create a small hole in your enamel so that we can gently clean out the inside of the infected tooth, removing the decaying pulp along with any bacteria. Once the tooth is good and clean, we’ll pack it full of dental filler and then seal it up with a filling or a crown to prevent any further infection in the future.

When Do I Need Root Canal Therapy?

You typically need a root canal after a tooth becomes infected or damaged. The purpose of the root canal is to prevent your tooth from decaying further and stop the spread of infection to the surrounding teeth, gums, and jaw. A root canal can save your remaining tooth structure, keeping us from having to perform an extraction and allowing you to continue eating and smiling as usual.

How Long Does a Root Canal Take?

A root canal is a routine procedure that typically takes between 30 and 60 minutes. Root canals are completed in a single visit and you’ll typically feel back to normal within a day or two. Our gentle, experienced team is here to support you through the process!
